I found yet another indie web youtube video and now I'm looking at migrating from neocities.. I'm gonna be honest, there wasn't much keeping me on here in the first place, it's just the place I was introduced to the indie web and so where this site has been hosted from the start.
I had heard about nekoweb a few times before, but after hearing about neocities' data scraping policies... yeah there's the push I've been missing to seriously consider nekoweb.
Of course, the majority of projects I do are hosted on github, so that's always an option too, and I have the best working environment for that too, but it's kind of refreshing to have a different setup for my personal site specifically, like working at a different desk! At the moment I use neocities' in browser code editor and it leaves a lot to be desired, and while I do enjoy embracing inconvenience, I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't enjoy a slightly more streamlined experience, and so nekoweb has another thing over neocities there.
But why not github? Well, mostly for the community. As I was revamping this website, I considered migrating there at that point, but elected that the community neocities offers is it's most valuable asset to me. Except... I don't think it's really all that valuable. My site has been neglected for a while, sure, but it's been up and my guestbook available for probably a year or so, and I'm still yet to see any comments. Not the most reliable metric for seeing if anyone's checked out my site, but it is a bit disheartening.
I'm hoping that neokoweb's relatively smaller community is a bit more close knit than neocities! I also feel a lot less lost among the other site's I've browsed there, I feel like there's much more commonality between my site and the sites hosted there :> Plus I finally understand (mostly) how rss feeds work, and poking around at nekoweb's integration with them seems promising! I have no idea if neocities has a similar feature, and I'm not sticking around to find out :p
I'd also like to finally join some webrings, but that's a whole different thing! Overall, I hope this will be a good change for the site.. and if it doesn't work out, I can always migrate back, or somewhere else :3 Nekoweb, here I come!
